Even though it’s a mobile game, it’s interesting to see Bethesda exploring the Elder Scrolls IP in new ways.

Just launched on the Google Play Store for free, Elder Scrolls: Castles is an intriguing game. The developers describe it as a sim game that puts you in control of a medieval dynasty as they try to survive in the world of Nirn, the classic Elder Scrolls setting. The game isn’t currently available for iOS or PC, but since it’s in Early Access for now, ports should be incoming. If you’ve always dreamed of taking control over a small colony in the world of Elder Scrolls, then this might sound like a dream mobile game for you.

A single look at any of the game’s screenshots will immediately remind you of Fallout Shelter. This older Bethesda title puts you in control of a vault in the post-apocalyptic setting of the Fallout games. The game quickly gained a lot of success, with plenty of players opting to spend real money on this mobile title. So it’s easy to understand why Bethesda made a similar game set in the Elder Scrolls world. Why they didn’t advertise it in any way and secretly launched it on the Android Store is anybody’s guess though.

For avid fans of the Elder Scrolls series, this might tide them over until we know more about the next game in the mainline series, which won’t be out for at least five years from now on. But until then, Bethesda seem to be doing fine for themselves after the launch of Starfield attracted more than 10 million players.
