It looks like developer Nightdive Studios is finally approaching the launch of their System Shock remake. After being announced in 2016, the project has struggled with multiple problems, but it looks like 2023 is the year we finally get our hands on this old-school gem.

What made the old game click?

System Shock is an FPS horror game that came out in 1994. As you would expect, the graphics were rudimentary compared to modern standards, but it still managed to immerse players in its horrific world. It was developed by LookingGlass Technologies and published by Origin Systems. The action is set on a space station in the year 2072. You take control of a security hacker as you try to foil the plans of the malevolent AI SHODAN, which has taken control of the station and plans to eradicate all crew members.

For its time, System Shock brought some groundbreaking emergent gameplay by adding RPG elements to the usual FPS dynamic. Most of the progress was non-linear, allowing you to figure out your unique way throughout the game. You could hack your way through locked doors and learn more about the story by hacking terminals and reading e-mails. Most of these elements don’t sound like much nowadays, but in 1994 they were truly unique and innovative.

What does the remake promise?

Besides updating the graphics to a more modern look, the remake has also tweaked some gameplay elements. The damage model of some enemies has also been improved, allowing you to deal more effectively with the horrors trying to end you. The developers have also bragged about a new dismemberment system. This will enable you to take your enemies apart. Focusing on certain parts of their bodies will also affect gameplay, like slowing them down or disabling certain weapons.

The audio has also been remastered, with new voice lines recorded. The mysterious nature of the audio is still there though, offering you a terrifying experience as you traverse the space station surrounded by horrible wails. People who aren’t big fans of the horror genre should come prepared, as this game doesn’t pull any punches when setting an ominous atmosphere.

What took so long?

As already stated, this remake was first announced in 2016 and encountered many issues along the way. Over the years, another studio (Prime Matter) joined the project, adding a lot of manpower. This allowed them to focus more on quality-of-life issues and generally polishing the game further. But despite all the hurdles and multiple delays, the project is finally getting ready for launch.  Only time will tell how this remake will pan out, but expectations are pretty high given the esteemed history of the classic game.

The System Shock remake will be out for PC in March 2023. No console ports have been announced yet.
