With Tokyo Game Show having come and gone, it’s time to take a look at some of the biggest announcements from this event.

Since E3 has been practically dead for some years now, most game studios have migrated to various other events like Gamescom, PAX, or the Tokyo Game Show. And while the bigger studios have their own yearly events where they show off new games and products, they also host their own panels at all these other events. So let’s have a look at some of the biggest announcements that could be seen at this year’s edition of Tokyo Game Show.

Dragon’s Dogma 2

While it didn’t have a lot of competition in the fantasy RPG genre when it launched in 2012, Dragon’s Dogma still had a pretty underwhelming launch. While you can blame that on Mass Effect 3 coming out the same year, the game did eventually pick up plenty of success in the coming years. This resulted in a remaster for PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch titled Dragon’s Dogma Dark Arisen.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 aims to bring back the characteristic combat style of the series, focusing on easy-to-master action elements with plenty of RPG depth. And yes, you can still climb on top of a Cyclops and repeatedly stab him in the eye. It’s precisely those mechanics that still bring people back to the original to this day, and it’s good to see Capcom returning it. So get ready to step into the shoes of the “chosen one” as you make your way across an intricate world filled with NPCs and plenty of baddies to take down.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes

The spiritual successor for the Suikoden JRPG series, Eiyuden Chronicle is the second game in the new series. It promises to do a lot of things right, giving you full control over a party of heroes with more than 100 characters available to choose from. The graphics continue the trend of the beautifully rendered 2.5D style, with plenty of gorgeous pixel art for old-school fans.

The story revolves around the Galdean Empire getting their hands on a new technology that can amplify the magic of the Rune-Lenses. To further solidify their power the Empire is now searching for an artifact that will enhance this new technology. It is on one such expedition that your adventure starts, as an Imperial Officer and a boy from a village have to fight together in order to survive. The fires of war will have them making some tough decisions as they make their way across this magical land.

OMEGA 6 The Video Game

Based on a manga created by a former Nintendo art director, Takaya Imamura, OMEGA 6 is a very unique title. Starting with the 16-bit graphics that are reminiscent of the SNES days, the game tries to create a unique adventure experience as you travel across galaxies. All of these travels have a purpose, though: finding a hospitable planet for the human race.

You can probably tell from the trailer that this game has plenty of tongue-in-cheek humor that you will experience throughout your adventures. The aliens you come across will have various quests for you, ranging from the serious to the completely ridiculous. The game also has a fairly simple combat system that will keep things engaging as you travel across the stars.

Hotel Barcelona

From SUDA51, creator of the No More Heroes series and Killer7 comes this action-platformer that oozes style with just the right amount of substance. The eponymous Hotel Barcelona is hosting a very unique event this year, a serial killer convention. It will be up to your character to take on these horrible murderers and put an end to their killing sprees. To achieve this you will have to jump, shoot, and skewer your way across multiple gorgeous levels. Each of these levels will finish with a boss fight that will put your platforming skills to the test.

While we don’t know a lot more about this title, the trailer has got me excited to give it a try. No More Heroes is a series dear to my heart, and this looks like a continuation of that style of craziness. And to top it all off the game has an amazing rock soundtrack that fits perfectly with the gory setting.

Galactic Glitch: Infinity’s Edge

Roguelike mechanics have slowly infiltrated the gaming world, becoming a staple for multiple game genres. While Galactic Glitch might look like your standard 2D space shooter, there is a lot of complexity hiding under the hood. With countless weapons, ships and upgrade options, no run you undergo in this game will be similar. To keep things interesting, physics plays a very important part in this game. Enemy ships as well as your own have inertia, meaning you won’t be able to instantaneously change your direction. You can also “pick up” asteroids with your tractor beam and fling them at enemy ships. All of this sounds great, and we need more roguelikes to try new things in different genres.

Nivalis

Since Cyberpunk 2077 launched, the genre has seen countless games that are trying to capitalize on the trend. Nivalis is an interesting spin on the genre though, letting go of the hyper-violent action that is characteristic of the setting. Instead, this is a life simulator set in a cyberpunk setting. Your character can buy various businesses across the town and manage them as best he can in order to make a profit. Buy your own apartment, grow your own crops, ride around the city in your new shiny car, the choice is up to you.
